Also known as a commercial bank. The comptroller of the currency of the U.S. Treasury charters a national bank. This institution functions as a member bank of the Federal Reserve and is an investing member of the its district federal reserve bank. National banks must be members of the Federal deposit insurance corporation (FDIC).
Negotiable order of withdraw account (NOW)
An interest-earning bank account where the owner may write drafts against the money held on deposit.
Nonmonetary transaction
A transaction occurring without the transfer of money between accounts for parties tied to the transaction (e.g., address change). For example, a $0 deposit to initiate an ACH transaction (e.g., direct deposit) is considered a nonmonetary transaction.
Describes the fee charged when a check is presented but cannot be covered by the balance in the account.
